Research Triangle Park, located in the heart of
North Carolina's beautiful Piedmont region, is a 7,000-acre campus
dedicated to nurturing research and development organizations. The
Research Triangle Park (RTP), recognized as an international center for
cutting-edge Research and Development, is owned by the private,
not-for-profit Research Triangle Foundation. Research Triangle is named
for the Triangle formed by the three cities and universities: Duke
University at Durham, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill,
and North Carolina State University.
RTP is home to over 170 private, governmental and
non-profit companies, with nearly 80% of them are involved in research
and development. These companies employ more than 42,000 people and
have in excess of 22 million square feet under roof. Companies like
IBM, GlaxoSmithKline, Cisco, Sony Ericsson, and Biogen thrive and grow
in a campus-like setting that lends itself to interactive research. RTP
has strict controls that require 85% of each tract of land be
landscaped and left undeveloped to ensure the Park maintains its
present beauty and freedom from congestion.
